This Article contains typographical errors in the Discussion section. " Our previous study 8 had proven that the local high concentration of free fatty acids in hypertriglyceridemic mice resulted in increased susceptibility to acute pancreatitis. We also had found enhanced susceptibility to acute pancreatitis in hypertriglyceridemic Syrian golden hamsters 26. Experimental Models in Syrian Golden Hamster Replicate Human Acute Pancreatitis

The hamster has been shown to share a variety of metabolic similarities with humans. To replicate human acute pancreatitis with hamsters, we comparatively studied the efficacy of common methods, such as the peritoneal injections of caerulein, L-arginine, the retrograde infusion of sodium taurocholate, and another novel model with concomitant administration of ethanol and fatty acid. The severit...

The Induction of Melanotic Tumors Resembling Cellular Blue Nevi in the Syrian White Hamster by Cutaneous Application of 7,12-Dimethylbenz[a]anthracene*

Melanotic tumors resembling cellular blue nevi of man were induced in the Syrian white hamster by single and multiple applications of 7,1~-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene (DMBA). Histologically they resembled the melanotic tumors produced under similar experimental conditions in the Syrian golden hamster. They showed great variations in pigment content from almost nonpigmented to heavily pigmented tu...

Expression and characterization of Syrian golden hamster p16, a homologue of human tumor suppressor p16 INK4A.

The p16(INK4A)/CDKN2A tumor suppressor gene is known to be inactivated in up to 98% of human pancreatic cancer specimens and represents a potential target for novel therapeutic intervention. Chemically induced pancreatic tumors in Syrian golden hamsters have been demonstrated to share many morphologic and biological similarities with human pancreatic tumors and this model may be appropriate for...

Relation of Certain Endocrine Disturbances to Susceptibility of Golden Syrian Hamster to Experimental Poliomyelitis

Alterations in susceptibility of the Syrian hamster to poliomyelitis virus (MEF1) inoculated intracerebrally appeared closely related to seasonal changes and experimental disturbances in the adreno-testes equilibrium. Enhanced susceptibility coincided with seasonal enlargement of adrenals, followed cortisone and DOCA treatment and appeared during the initial postorchiectomy period. Increased re...

A Transplantable Induced Melanotic Tumor of the Syrian Golden Hamster*

The present paper records the availability of a new transplantable melanotic tumor in the Syrian golden hamster. A previous report (1) described the induction of multiple pigmented tumors in the Syrian golden hamster following the application to the skin of a single dose of the carcinogen 9,10dimethyl-l,2-benzanthracene. These tumors were sharply demarcated and located in the dermis and subcuta...
